The Grandmother\, Ah Xue\, witnesses the rise of the Communist Revolution while earning a meager living combing the hair of the few wealthy ladies in her small fishing village. Mimosa\, the Mother\, grows up in the shadow of her parents’ struggles as the growing tension of the Cultural Revolution threatens to pull their family apart. And Fei Fei\, the Daughter\, brought up as a “boy” by her activist father\, grapples with gender identity in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square massacre. \n\n\nAwash in the tides of societal upheaval\, Ah Xue\, Mimosa\, and Fei Fei are all driven by the instinct to survive\, weathering hardship that splinters the boundary between the personal and the political. DESCRIPTION:The Whole Truth\, the Half Truth\, and Something Like the Truth.” Examining memory may be what initially draws some of us towards writing\, but the truth is our memories are malleable and the line between fiction and fact can feel blurry\, especially when invoking imagination. The boundaries of truth\, it turns out\, aren’t universally drawn. So how do we write into the spaces we can’t remember or the moments where contradictions abound? The times we want to paint as black or white\, but where gray seems to be the only color available in our palettes? This lecture examines truth as a spectrum\, culling scientific data alongside quotes from writers with varying perspectives on what counts as ‘nonfiction’. We’ll walk away with generative prompts and exercises to sharpen our craft while guiding us towards carving our very own lines of truth. As an educator\, Emilly has taught in public high schools\, correctional facilities\, MFA programs\, and through organizations such as Tin House\, Literary Arts\, Corporeal Writing\, Lighthouse Writers Workshop\, and the Independent Publishing Resource Center. Her writing has appeared in 30+ outlets including NPR\, Marie Claire\, and Eater\, and has been supported by fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, Oregon Humanities\, and Randolph College\, amongst others. Ortiz joins us to present her newly reissued books\, Excavation\, Bruja\, and Hollywood Notebook. A darkly vibrant and daring memoir\, Ortiz’s Excavation (Northwestern University Press) challenged the standard telling of abuse narratives when first published in 2014; over a decade later\, it remains deeply prescient. Set in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley in the late 1980s\, the narrative follows the spiraling entanglement between Ortiz and her eighth-grade English teacher as she becomes both victim to and participant in a simultaneously predatorial and impassioned relationship. Dubbed a “dreamoir\,” Bruja (Northwestern) is a bold and harrowing journey through the dream worlds of Ortiz. Sister memoir to Hollywood Notebook\, it catalogs the happenings of the night: strange visions of the past warped by present-day inklings; animals running loose\, never where they should be; familiar nature and architecture made malleable and new. A daylight traipse through early-aughts Los Angeles\, Hollywood Notebook (Northwestern) encapsulates the powerful feelings and hopeful futures of twentysomething Ortiz. In this boundary-defying sister memoir to Bruja\, Ortiz navigates internal maps as she traverses external palm-treed streets\, moving through her youthful twenties and into the pensiveness of her thirties.
